Biography: Dorothy Mavis Mashburn Plunkett, 92, a devoted homemaker and daughter of a pioneering Arkansas family, died on Saturday, October 20, 2012, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mrs. Plunkett was born on August 12, 1920, in Little Rock as the youngest of six children of Henry Allen Mashburn and Nancy Bertrand Crawford Mashburn. She was graduated from the former Little Rock High School and attended the former Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, where she met her future husband, Vern E. Plunkett of Fort Smith. During World War II with Mr. Plunkett in the U.S. Army 206th Coast Artillery stationed in the Aleutian Islands at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, the future Mrs. Plunkett served as executive secretary to Homer Martin Atkins, governor of Arkansas from 1941-1945. When Mr. Plunkett returned from his overseas station in 1944, he married Mavis Mashburn at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock in a union that would endure for 63 years. A Little Rock Junior Tennis Champion in her youth, Mrs. Plunkett as an adult was active in various charity organizations at Little Rock including long-standing service as a volunteer at UAMS. She was a charter member of the Little Rock Yacht Club, a long-time member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, and a devout member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock, where she served as a guild officer. Mrs. Plunkett enjoyed playing bridge and golf and traveling with her husband, an insurance executive who piloted his own airplane, often with Mrs. Plunkett serving as co-pilot. But her primary focus concerned the nourishment of her family as a devoted mother and loving grandmother. She will be remembered for the unconditional love and generosity of heart she consistently showed to family and friends that was so much a part of her spirit. She will be dearly missed. Survivors include one son, Robert A. Plunkett and wife, Tanya Perry Plunkett; two grandchildren, Jeffrey M. Plunkett and wife, Donna Berry Plunkett; and Maria B. Troeger and husband, Christopher K. Troeger; and two great grandchildren, Diana Morgan Plunkett and Conall Alexander Plunkett, all of Little Rock; a sister-in-law, Rubye Plunkett of Fort Smith, plus two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, two infant sons, her parents, two brothers, Louis Allen Mashburn of Little Rock and Carl Mashburn of Sherwood, and three sisters, Mary Louise Mashburn Rotenberry of Little Rock, Thelma Mashburn Day of Hot Springs, and Argie Mashburn Ferguson of Houston, Tex., and two nieces. A graveside memorial service will be conducted on Monday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m., followed by interment in Roselawn Memorial Park by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 310 West 17th Street, Little Rock, AR 72206, or a favorite charity.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mavis. We grew up across the street from the Vern and Mavis in Wingate. She was the sweetest person I think I ever met and always had a smile on her face. She kept up with us even as adults and I will never forget her. Vern took us up in his plane once and that memory will also stay with me the rest of my life. Our entire family offers prayers to yours.

I grew up with Mavis and I have always considered
her a Big Sister instead of an Aunt. She was just a joy to be with and I LOVE her dearly.
