Biography: Everett Martin Hathorn Jr., a longtime resident of Little Rock, died on June 9, 2012, after an extended illness. He was 82. Nicknamed ?Big E? for his large spirit and joy of life, Mr. Hathorn had a successful career as an insurance sales manager, overseeing and befriending salespeople throughout Arkansas for decades after moving to Little Rock in 1970. A baseball enthusiast, Mr. Hathorn was well-known at Ray Winder Field, where he kept the same box seats (row E7) for decades and entertained friends with his ability to tell colorful jokes and stories. He was on the board of directors of the Arkansas Travelers. Upon his retirement, Mr. Hathorn bought box seats at Busch Stadium and spent much of his summers watching the St. Louis Cardinals. A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., he graduated from Mississippi State University and also served in the Air Force. Mr. Hathorn was a loving father, a charismatic one of a kind and the world will never be the same without him. He is survived by his two sons, David Hathorn of Los Angeles and Clay Hathorn of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Griffin Hathorn, Sofia Hathorn and Hazen Hathorn, all of Portland; a daughter-in-law, Sara Hathorn of Portland; and his former wife, Jo Ann Plunkett of Little Rock. The services will be private, but friends are invited to an open house at 7 Sonata Trail, Little Rock, Monday, June 18, 5 to 7 p.m. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

My first experience with "Big E" was soon after I started working for Allstate Insurance Co. in 1976. Everettt's station wagon had been involved in a collision and was a total loss. Since I was the newest employee in the claim department I was selected to handle the settlement of "Big E"'s" auto claim which really scared the pants off me. Everett's bigger than life persona added to my anxiety but the settlement was painless and we have been friends ever since.

Everett was a wonderful employer. It never felt like work when he was around and that is something most will never experience. I thank him for that and will miss him dearly as an employer and friend.

Everett was both a good friend and business associate at Allstate over the last 25 years -- and will definitely be missed. He was always fun to be around --- and was affectionately called "Big E". My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Everett was a "one of a kind" person. This world will be alot less humorous without him. All of us who knew him will always have a place in our hearts for the "Big E".

Everett was my sales manager for over 20 years. He had a major role in making me a successful insurance salesman. His guidance and leadership was recognized and rewarded by our company. Beyond this, Everett was a true personal friend who always had a kind and encouraging word for me. Everett was never better than when he showed loving compassion for me in the sorrow of losing my son and wife to diabetes and cancer. I WILL MISS HIM! God bless him and rest his soul.
