Biography: Brett Gary Blakney, 43, died on May 4, 2012 in Clinton, Arkansas. Brett was born on November 17, 1968 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Brett was baptized at St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Shreveport. In 1982, Brett moved with his family to Harrison, Arkansas, where they attended St. John?s Episcopal Church. Brett became very active in the Episcopal Church, serving as an acolyte, participating in EYC, and attending Camp Mitchell. At Harrison High School, Brett was involved in student life and on the tennis team. Brett also discovered the love of photography and journalism, which he later incorporated into his early career. Brett had a love for the outdoors and spent his childhood visiting his grandparents on their farm in Stamps, Arkansas. Brett also spent many holidays and summers with his family at Lake DeGray. After moving to northern Arkansas, Brett quickly fell in love with the mountains and rivers of the region and spent a great deal of time canoeing on the Buffalo River. Later, he enjoyed boating and fishing on Greer?s Ferry Lake, where his home was located. Brett attended UAF, UCA, and UALR, where he received a Bachelor?s Degree in technical writing and rhetoric. Brett?s interests and talents led him to pursue many careers in his early adult life. A persistent theme was the restaurant business, in which he was always the most popular server, bar tender, and manager. He loved to impress a crowd with his bartending skills, and won various bartending competitions. He eventually moved to Clinton, Arkansas where he immediately became involved in the community and politics. In Clinton, Brett was a reporter and photographer for the Van Buren County Democrat. He was also the former Main Street Clinton Executive Director, which revitalized the historic downtown. Brett was the chair of the Young Democrats of Van Buren County. In 2001, Brett?s interest in government and politics led to his enrollment in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Bowen School of Law. In 2005, Brett graduated with his JD and quickly opened his private practice?the Blakney Law Office?in downtown Clinton. He was a member of the Arkansas Bar Association. In 2011, Brett opened the Black Dog Grill in downtown Clinton. He juggled successfully his busy law practice and owning and operating the restaurant. He had many plans to continue pursuing his hobbies in international travel, music, and the outdoors. From an early age, Brett loved animals and was well-known for taking home and caring for strays and injured animals of all types. He was known for his compassionate spirit, gregarious personality, and boundless energy. Brett is survived by his parents, Gloria and Gary Blakney and his sister Jane Anne Blakney-Bailey of Little Rock, his grandmother, Lorene Smith of Stamps, his close extended family of cousins and aunts and uncles, and his niece and nephew, Izzy and Liam Bailey. He is also survived by his adopted daughter Ryan Tucker of Wichita Falls, Texas. He leaves behind a host of close friends and his beloved girlfriend Amanda Sullins of Clinton. Memorial services are set for three o?clock Wednesday, May 9 at St. Mark?s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, Little Rock, Arkansas, with a reception following in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Brett Blakney Memorial Scholarship, UALR Bowen School of Law,1201 McMath Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202, or the Pulaski County Humane Society, 14600 Colonel Glenn Road Little Rock, AR 72210 in Brett?s name. We decided that the most sensible thing to do in life was to do everything possible while we were still young because when we were older, we might miss out on something. We took two trips to Europe the first year we were married. Then we took more and more after that. We immersed ourselves in music and followed Pat Green like Deadheads. We lived in a cabin on a lake with no plumbing while we drove a 7 series BMW. We adopted our neice. In Hawaii, we took the back door in to the party at the Hilton where Michael Jackson and Yoko Ono were staying and we rang in 1999 with Yumi and Katsumi Ogichi: newlyweds. We bought a John Lennon lithograph "once upon a time there were no problems" and we believed that. We climbed Mt.Cynthia in Delos leaning over the Aegean feeling God while the crazy wind held us up. We didn't know limits. Want to be a lawyer? Sure! Go to Vanderbilt? Why not! I am grateful that we believed all things were possible. Much love to you. Here's to you, here's to me, best of friends we'll always be...

Brett's obit is a lovely tribute to a beautiful life that was much too short. And what a great job you did bringing him up.

As my daughter Emilie said, he is now in heaven with grandpa (Warner). We are so sorry for your tragic loss.

I first met Brett in February and a few times since, but it wasn't like meeting someone new, it was like we had known each other for a long time. He was always so pleasant to talk with and he always had a smile on his face. I find it hard to believe that he is gone, but I know that he is in a much better place. I haven't heard anyone say a thing bad about him. I will miss him. May the Lord lift his family and friends up and hold them tightly during this sad time. y

Brett was just like a son to me. I can't explain the love I had for this young man and the void he filled in my life(I lost a son in 1987). He was always there if I needed him. Brett went to Alaska fishing with me several times and was always the perfect companion. We normally had a party of six to ten from several different states and Brett was always the "life of the party." He never met a stranger. I cannot explain the emptiness I now feel upon his passing.

My sincere sympathy to Gloria, Gary, and Jane Anne, Mrs. Smith and the rest of the family.

I give my deepest sympathy to his family, Shannon and all who knew him. I can not believe I will never see Brett again, his death is a huge loss in my life and many more. I have known Brett for what seems like an eternity and his passing reminds me of the loss of my favorite uncle - a wonderful soul taken way too soon. Not very many people in life are able to make an impression that lasts forever. Brett was unique. He was always true to himself and to others. He was fun, amazingly creative and inspiring . . . and I just can't believe that he is gone. My mom also loved being around Brett. She thought the world of him. He will be truly missed. To the family of Brett: the town of Clinton will always remember all the good he did for this community. He was only one man, but he touched the lives of so many more.

To say ?I will miss you terribly,? my steadfast friend, seems as futilely obvious as ?Rain will fall down always?. There simply aren?t words . . .
The ?preppy? new kid in 8th grade, you soon became an EYC comrade and partner in mischief. As we grew, our friendship matured (faster than our common sense, Gloria and Sue will tell). You were charismatic, extraordinarily clever, and loyal. An unmatched conversationalist, you tempered your passion for observations and ideas with a broad and truth-seeking mind. Together we discovered music, rivers, and rites of youthful passage. Our parting after graduation was merely geographic; sometimes a year or two went by between get-togethers, yet when we would reunite it always seemed only a day had passed.
May God hold your loving Family?who helped to forge the exceptional and beloved man you became?in the Palm of his Hand. I will always Love you, Bro, and ?Rain will fall down always? until, after what then will only seem like a moment has passed, we again reunite.

My heart goes out to all Of you. I cannot imagine your pain as I only knew Brett for a few short years but loved him immensely. He was such an enthusiastic guy with grand ideas. One of my favorite things to do was argue with him and know that even if we agreed to disagree neither of us would have hard feelings. (We had a great many wonderful debates on various topics.) He would often joke that I was his "junior associate" and that he had my office waiting for me (I am in law school) and I would often remind him that his disorganization would drive me to madness ;) I will always remember him for his love of his dogs (long after they could see or hear:) and his love of local live music (he introduced me to many great acts). I will keep all of you in my prayers. My heavy heart is eased by the knowledge that Brett made an incredible mark on our town and all the people in it. Even though he is gone, he will NEVER be forgotten. RIP my friend <3
