Katy Rice was born December 7, 1919 in Little Rock, the daughter of John Roy Donham, a Little Rock insurance executive, and Veda Fitzhugh Donham. She attended Little Rock public schools, graduating from Little Rock (Central) High School in 1937. She was a member of the Class of 1941 at Hendrix College, Conway, AR and in 1942 was married to James Horner Rice, Jr. of Little Rock. Katy was a lifelong Methodist whose interest in Arkansas Methodist history led to her appointment as the Archivist of the Little Rock Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1980, she authored A History of the First United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas 1831 ? 1981 to commemorate the church?s sesquicentennial. She served as church historian for twenty-eight years, creating with her husband the History Hall where many Methodist historic photographs and artifacts are displayed. She was a board member of the Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Arkansas United Methodist Historical Society. Mrs. Rice was a member of the Women?s Emergency Committee, the political organization which worked to re-open and to support Little Rock public schools during the 1957 desegregation crisis. In the 1970?s she was employed at the Old State House Museum, first as a guide, then as Registrar, a position for which she trained at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. In 1986 she was appointed to serve on the Arkansas Sesquicentennial Commission as head of the Religious Organizations Task Force. This group sponsored four regional workshops on church history-writing and church archives management during the year. For four years she was the Arkansas Representative for UNICEF. Mrs. Rice wrote two additional histories which were published: The History of Lakeside Country Club and The History of Belcher Lake Farms, a hunting and fishing club in southeast Arkansas, which she co-authored with her son, Mike Rice. Katy was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who instilled a love of reading and exploring in her children and grandchildren. She spent many years as the Little Rock representative of Camp Monterey and Camp Country Lad, in Monterey, TN. I only recently learned of Katy's death and saddened that I did not know at the time. I was fortunate enough to meet my Aunt Top about 10 years ago on a trip to Arkansas, after "discovering" her online while doing genealogy research. She was a fellow genealogy buff, and we had many discussions about the Donham family history. She was a gracious, intelligent, and warm person. I only wish I had known her sooner.

Your mother was such a special lady. She was a wealth of information about the church history of First United Methodist Church and Methodist throughout Arkansas. Both of your parents were so supportive of me as I was growing up in the church and later in my ministry. My prayers are with you all.

God bless,

Katy was one of the most gracious people I ever knew. She welcomed me when I first joined First Church in 1980 and has been a mentor to me ever since. Her faithful commitment to documenting the history of our church and community will be hard to replicate. She also mentored my mother and the History Committee at Lakeside UMC in Pine Bluff, and Mom was extraordinary fond of her.

Mike, Kathy, Jim, and Louise,
Growing up with your mother at First Methodist will be a great memory of mine forever. She was a gracious lady and mom to all of us running around with you, Mike, and little sister, Kathy.
I know that your mom and mine are together again and looking down on us with a loving eye to know that we miss your mom so much for her kindness and good natured heart.
Blessings to all of the family.

Jim,
I was so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was always the epitome of class and one of the nicest people I ever had the good fortune to know. My mother, who informed me yesterday that she had known Katy for 89 of her 92 years, asked me to pass along her condolences as well.

It has certainly been one of the great experiences in my life meeting your mom some thirty eight years ago, when I came into your home as an exchange student from Bolivia. She was always so caring, thoughtful and loving. May her soul be blessed forever. And may you feel comfort with the great legacy of love that she and your dad left to you.

What a wonderful life she lived, and how much she touched so many of us over the years! I met Katy at Camp Monterey when I was still in college, and she was one of the most influential people in my life over the past 48 years! I will miss her greatly, but I am sure she is already organizing the archives in Heaven - the newest of God's Angels! I will always love her - what a legacy of family and friends she has left the world!
