Biography: Edward D. Fry, II died January 13, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after an 8-month battle with cancer. Ed was born on November 23, 1956, in Alton, Illinois, and was an Arkansas resident since 1971. After graduating from Ouachita Baptist University at the age of nineteen, he immersed himself in Democratic politics and continued his education, studying for a master?s degree at Emory University in Atlanta and earning a law degree from the UALR Bowen School of Law in Little Rock. Ed started his career in 1978 at Worthen Bank, then at its leasing affiliate, FALCO. He was Chief of Staff for three successive Arkansas 2nd District Congressmen. After retiring from federal service, he worked for the consulting firm James Lee Witt and Associates in their Washington office until his death. Before moving in 1990 to Washington, DC, Ed was elected President of the Young Democrats of America. A life-long ?Yellow Dog? Democrat, Ed was one of the original ?Arkansas Travelers,? an enthusiastic group that campaigned around the country and helped personally introduce the nation to William Jefferson Clinton during the ?92 presidential campaign. Ed was a third generation mariner, earning his USCG Masters License at age 18. Many will remember his operation of the Motor Yacht ?CURRENT EVENT? for several years on the Arkansas River in Little Rock. Ed gained his love for the water from his grandfather who took him as a deck hand to deliver boats built by his father at Grafton, Illinois and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. During these early years, he crewed to many river locations and cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, and Santa Marta, Columbia, S.A. Ed is survived by his life partner, Mark W. McCullough of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his parents, Edward D. and Patricia A. Fry and sister Leah Ann Taylor of Franklin, TN; sister Andrea Zomber of Edgewater, MD; six nieces and nephews and wonderful cousins in Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Missouri; and his special long-time friend, Ann Gilbert, of Little Rock. Ed requested his body be donated to the University of Miami?s Miller School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 1101 N. Mississippi Street in Little Rock with the Reverend Betsy Singleton Snyder presiding. Immediately following the service, a reception for family and friends will be held at the Argenta Community Theater at 405 Main Street, North Little Rock. Memorials may be made to the Ed Fry Internship, payable to the Democratic Party of Arkansas, 1300 West Capitol Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72201, to the Clinton Global Initiative, 610 President Clinton Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72201, or for the Alumni Scholarship Fund, payable to the UALR Bowen School of Law, 1201 McMath Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202. News of Ed's premature passing just got to me today, May 26, via OBU's alumni magazine, and I wanted to offer my belated condolences to his friend Mark and family. I have only one, quick Ed story to pass along, but it's a doozy -- how he helped me at a time of great need with no promise of anything in return. The year was 1978, and I had been out of OBU a couple of years, working in the newspaper business and falling for the woman who's still the love of my life. Shortly after our marriage that July, I was preparing for our move to Columbia, Mo., where I would work on my master's at Missouri's School of Journalism. Ed somehow heard about this and offered to help me move, which involved not only packing and moving our meager belongings but a rickety 35-foot trailer that would be our home while I was in grad school. We took turns driving the huge Ryder truck, pulling the trailer through the winding Ozark mountains while my wife drove our car separately. I was amazed to learn that Ed had made plans to rent an airplane and fly home. I was also amazed to learn he was a licensed pilot even at that young age. I remember that I felt terrible later that I had never kept in touch with Ed or found a way to repay his magnanimous generosity. From all I've read, I was just one of many people touched by his generous spirit. Peace be with you.

I grew up with Eddie in Grafton, Illinois and we were what I considered, best friends until he moved to Arkansas in 1972.The last time I saw him was July of 1976 after he and I had made the trip from Grafton to Pine Bluff via Memphis Tenn.,an adventure I'll never forget!God bless all of his family and loved ones. Proud to have known him and cared for him. David T. Wright
P.S. Grafton seems like a lifetime ago!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ed Fry. A man whom I always had a deep affection as my former Supervisor. We became very close due to our passion for the politics of our kind. Although I had not seen or heard from him in while, he was thought of often.

I pray that the family finds peace and comfort in knowing that The Lord who knew his heart.

To Ed and Pat, Leah and Andrea, please accept my belated yet deepest sympathy. I only learned of Eddie's death through a brief notice from Mike Ross's office that appeared in the Pine Bluff paper Jan. 22. I remember Eddie both as a bubbly youth, and an ardent politician. His accomplishments are recounted best by others, but he will always remain as a shining branch on our family tree.

Ed was always available to help, whether it was in campaigning, about the Dem Party, or helping with issues in Washington. I will also remember your handling of any situation with a smile on your face, and never failed to venture an opinion laced with humor. It is way to soon to have to say goodby!

Ed Fry was the best campaign sign waver known to man. I've shared many a street corner with him pushing our candidate of choice. Ed was relentless in his quest for good government and a better world. His enthusiasm and zest were contagious. The world is a better place because of Ed Fry. He has left a lasting imprint. I hope we all follow his lead.

Mark, Fry family and Ann--I'm so very sorry. Ed was a longtime Young Democrat friend and ally, a friendship which continued long past the YD cutoff age. I'll never forget his smile and love of life.

Ed, Pat and family,
Both of us were moved by the news of Eddie?s death. As we read through the St. Louis Post Dispatch obituary, both of us were impressed with all that he accomplished. We will always remember ?little Eddie? and the time we had at Grafton is still a vital part of our memory bank. Our prayer for you and your family is that you would know God?s peace and grace for this very difficult time.

My condolences to Ed's family and all his treasured friends who loved him so. Mostly my memories of Ed are from stories others have told about him; he lives on as legend. I worked with him briefly in the mid-90's as a member of Congressman Thornton's staff. He was kind enough to mentor me, as he did so many young people. I know he will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Ed during my time at Witt Associates. He never had an unkind word for anyone, and brought me many smiles. I will treasure memories of sailing around the Potomac with him and Mark and my coworkers one night after work. We talked about that night and their hospitality many times after. My condolences to Mark and Ed's families.

Mark, Mr. and Mrs. Fry and family,

I have told Mark this in person but want the whole family to know how much his family of friends here in Arkansas and quite frankly throughout the United States will miss Ed. We all love him dearly. He taught us tolerance, even of Republicans (however, we were never to vote for one) and he was a shining example of patience. He knew and respected the political system and always wanted everyone to love the process as much as he did. Even though he was younger than me he was a mentor in many ways. He also shared his love of the water and flying with each of us and stories abound about various trips with Ed. He wil live on in our hearts and memories. We are so sad right now and our prayers for peace and understanding are with Mark and Ed's families.

Ed Fry - a 'Prince of A Man!' I am grieved to learn of this dear man's life ending so soon. He was wise, helpful and fun; Ed was always willing to provide assistance to Arkansawyers - and did so swiftly and professionally when others did not know where to turn. He will be missed for many reasons but mostly for just being a quality gentleman and a terrific friend.

Ed Fry was one of the kindest people that I've ever known. What I learned about Washington D.C.'s machinations I learned from Ed. The world just lost a wonderful smle and an occasional mischievous thought or two. You will be sorely missed.

Ed Fry will be missed by many. Ed was a mentor to me during my time in Washington as he was for many others working on Capitol Hill. I always looked up to him and valued his opinion and perspective. He was a very nice person who made himself available to everyone that was interested in talking to him. I often leaned on Ed for advice, and I valued his sincerity and interest in making things better for others around him. I hope that I am able to provide to others what he provided me. He was a great man and a great American.

Ed & Pat,
Wow, I can't believe Eddie is gone. Just learning of his Cancer was a shock but losing your son is heart breaking. He was a great kid & very hard worker. Now he is the arms of Jesus & in no more pain & not being alone because he is with his Grandmother & Grandfather (my Aunt Gracie & Uncle Everette). We all had some really great times when our kids were young in the mid-west. Many prayers are coming your way: Love & Blessings from Jan (Madden)McNally, Bill McNally, Adam Ranciglio, Justin & Judy Ranciglio in San Diego. We love you all. Wish I could give you a big ole hug... I am so sad & sorry this has happened.
