Biography: William Ross McDonald, age 58, went to be with the Lord August 11,2006, after complications suffered from a stroke. He was born February 15, 1948, in Searcy, Arkansas, to Otis and Zelda McDonald. Throughout his youth, he was an active member in the Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Bald Knob High School, Bill attended Ouachita Baptist University and the University of Central Arkansas. He majored in physical education and health education and lettered in track and field. Bill has taught for 36 years, with the past 31 years at Oak Grove High School. Known as "Coach Mac," he has coached football, track, baseball and golf, but his favorite was basketball. His players loved him for his dedication and the excitement he felt for each team. He had a strong desire for each player to do well both on and off the court. He also worked at Sterling Paint Company where he enjoyed serving and visiting with customers. Bill married Mary Jane Swearingen on August 21, 1971, after meeting at UCA. Together they shared a wonderful life and had two daughters, Beth McDonald Toland and Ann McDonald Polson. Family was always a priority, and he loved them dearly. He would have done anything for his wife and daughters, and they him. When Bill was not coaching or spending time with his family, he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his yard always looked immaculate. Bill has attended Immanuel Baptist Church for the last 35 years. He had a strong faith in God, and we know he is in Heaven celebrating with Jesus in his new, healed body. We are anxiously awaiting the reunion! He was preceded in death by his parents Otis and Zelda McDonald. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane McDonald, daughters Beth Toland and husband Chad of Little Rock; Ann Polson and husband Preston of Little Rock; grandchildren Matthew, Gracen and Lauren Toland of Little Rock; brother Jim McDonald, wife D'Lisa, and their children Kate and Leigh McDonald of Benton; sister Sarah Poyyak and her daughter Renee Dorian both of Wichita, KS. Visitation for Bill will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2006, at Ruebel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2006, at Immanuel Baptist Church with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery in Atkins, Ark. The family would like to express grateful appreciation for all of the concern and support received during the 15 days he spent in the hospital. While in the hospital, Bill had 178 different visitors, which is a testimony of how many lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church Recreation Center Ministry.

Coach Mac wasn't just one of those teachers who taught the lesson and that was that. He liked to start up class discussions and really listened to what people had to say. I know everyone at Oak Grove will miss him, from all his story telling to his dedication to his students. God bless.

Coach Mac was a great man and he touched many lives as witnessed by this message board. I have many great memories of him and the time I spent with him as my coach or teacher. As a basketball coach, I remember him jumping and yelling doing everything he could to get us to win. At practice, he would show us free throws were so easy that he could make 20 in a row with his eyes closed, and he did. In football, I would always look to him on the sidelines to see what defensive play he was telling me to call. My favorite was probably him making the motions of shaving his face to tell me to call a blitz. At practice, he would return punts and somehow outrun everyone on the field for a touchdown. I was also lucky enough to have him for an English teacher. He had these overhead projector rolls of notes he kept in his closet that seemed to go on forever. He was a great English teacher, and I learned a lot in his class. He always had a funny joke to tell. There was the three legged chicken joke, and something was always more fun than getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick. Every time Coach Palmer would yell hold up, Coach Mac was always there to yell, Bank Robbery! Coach Mac was a great man, with a big heart and everyone that knew him knows it. He is in a great place now and he will be missed here.

Mary Jane, Beth, and Ann and all your family,
Gary and I were so sorry to learn of Bill's death. He was a wonderful man and a treasured friend. Because of situations in our lives, our paths don't cross for some time, then they do. We are thankful for all the times we shared with
you and be certain you are in our prayers at this sad time. Bill is in a better place for sure. We will pray for strength and comfort in your loss.

Our hearts are heavy today because we just heard
today that our dear friend passed away on Friday.
The day he came to Miss Bettye McLauglin's funeral, we had a great visit. I'm sorry ya'll
couldn't make our class reunion in May, he said
you had prior plans. Clois and Billy Ross
played football together in High School and were
great friends. We had not heard about his stroke
or death until today-Monday, so we couldn't make
visitation or the funeral. Our prayer is that
God will comfort you and sustain each of you until your great reunion day. God Bless You--

I went to school with Billy Ross from grade school, through high school, and at UCA. He was always a great guy and willing to help anyone. I was sad to hear of his passing and wish to express to his family my condolences. I know he will be greatly missed. We always thought of Billy Ross as a firecracker - because we could get him so mad in high school his face would turn bright red and we were afraid he would explode. He settled down in college and I know was a wonderful husband, father, coach, and friend. May his family find strength and comfort in knowing he is definitely with the Lord. May God bless and comfort you and your family, Mary Jo, in this great time of loss.

The Lord has received another "Coach" to help with those who need help in enjoying Heaven. I was only allowed one personal meeting with Bill, but it was all that I needed to know that he loved the Lord.Just think, no more pain or sorrow, just joy forever and ever.We shall have sorrow here, but remember that we will be together soon. Our prayers and thoughts are with you today and for the days to come.Bill would have been proud of his Golf team, showing up at a match, because that is were he would want them to be. My father passed on to heaven 2 weeks ago, so I know that Bill has some new friends to talk to besides all of his family that is already there. The Lord is with you and will keep you in your time of sorrow, but he will fill you with joy knowing that Coach "Mac" is whole again.

I count myself among the, no doubt, thousands of very fortunate men and women to have had their life permanently and positively altered by the impact of Coach Mac. The lessons he taught in the classroom and on the basketball court still guide me today.

He taught me to properly diagram a sentence; a skill at which I'm a bit rusty, but promise to brush up on before my son reaches the eighth grade. He also taught me - whether I liked it or not - to appreciate poetry. To this day, I can recite most of Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" from memory. Can't remember where I left my keys most days, but "Half a League Half a League?" No problem. And he taught me to shoot a basketball with perfect technique.

But, the most enduring lesson I learned from Coach Mac was from his example: with intensity and passion, anything and everything is possible.

At the risk of being inappropriate, I'd like to share my favorite memory of Coach Mac: Most of us who played for Coach Mac knew the height and intensity of the flush of his skin was directly proportional to the intensity of his anger. If his bald spot was red, you were in trouble.

Basketball season1980. We were in a tournament and I had shot, missed and retrieved my own rebound numerous times in a row. But, for the life of me, I couldn't sink the shot. Out of frustration, I let go an innaproprate word and received a technical foul for it.

I was not about to look directly at Coach Mac. From the corner of my eye, I could see him going crazy on the sideline. So I simply walked directly to the end of the bench. I seriously thought his head was about to explode.

His anger had subsided by the time we got on the bus. And, after a "rather rigorous" workout the next day, I had learned Newton's Third Law: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I had just learned Physics from a rather remarkable English teacher.

The world was better for having had Coach Mac in it. Today, it is sadly less so.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Coach "Mac". The coaching profession has lost a great teacher, coach and person. We always looked forward to playing Oak Grove because it was a chance to "visit" with Bill and catch him up on all the Atkins news, and he usually had a few good stories to tell. We will miss him and God bless from the entire Red Devil family.

Coach Mac was truly a role model for his players and he expected his players to fulfill those expectations. As Bald Knob Bulldogs and Beebe Badgers he and I looked forward to competing as students then as coaches. Words cannot express the deep sorrow that we feel and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Coach Mac's family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Coach Mac is a great man and will truly be missed, but not forgotten. He was a great coach, teacher, and friend and had an immeasurable impact on so many lives. I would see him once every couple of years at an OG BB game and he would hug me like I was his own son. We would talk about games from 20 years ago and he could remember everything about those games. He cared so much about his family, students, players, and OGH. He brighted so many lives and me and my family are very thankful for the special memories we have of Coach Mac.

Have know Bill for several years. he always had a smile on his face and always seemed to enjoy talking. The last time I remember seeing him was while my wife and I were walking at the high school. It wasn't long until he had his wallet out showing us pictures of the whole family and especially the grand kids. He always beamed when he mentioned any member of his family. He will be missed. We walk a lot at school and if we didn't talk , he would always holler at us or at least wave at us. He will certainly be missed by us. Lynn & Barbara Barber

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Coach McDonald. I'm writing you to affirm what you already know. That is he was a tremendous influence on many young men and women. The breadth of his influence I cannot imagine.

I was one of his football, basketball, and track athletes as well as one of his English students. I graduated from Oak Grove in '82 and Coach Mac had me from 7th grade basketball through 9th grade track ('76-'79). He taught me everything from dribbling a basketball to diagramming sentences to long snapping to poetry. However, his most important lesson was to believe that we are always capable of more and that limits are only those that those set in our minds. That lesson has stayed with me my whole life.

Coach Mac made a great sacrifice for his athletes and students. Even today I can remember him talking about his family and particularly his baby (at that time) Beth. One basketball practice he shared how much it pained him to have to leave home early every morning before Beth woke only to get back home late to find her already asleep. Mary, Beth, and Ann thank you for your sacrifice too. My life and many others are forever better having learned from your husband and father.

To our Beloved Mrs. McDonald:

Words are mere expressions of the deep and sincere sympathy that we offer you and your family in this, your hour of bereavement. May each of you find comfort in the loving arms of a God who cares about our sorrows and one who will share all our of pain. I pray that the memories of your dear husband and friend will always linger in your heart and that you will not only cherish them, but build upon them in the days and years ahead. Though difficult the moment, there is no pain that Heaven cannot and will not heal. God knows and yes, God still cares! I love you, and my prayers are with you and your family. As you enter into the darkest hours, remember: "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Find peace in knowing that your love one is resting in the arms of a loving God.

Mary Jane and Family, Bill was a great neighbor and always a pleasure to talk to - he probably never met a stranger. Often he would chat with folks just walking down the street like he had known them forever. I enjoyed his easy going nature and his willingness to share a fishing story! It was clear that he loved his family. As a good neighbor, he often offered to look after my place whenever we were out of town. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.
