Biography: Kathryn ?Deenie? Carland, died September 8, after a short illness. Concern for and dedication to family and friends defined her. This quality and many others are remembered and missed. Born January 25, 1918, in what is now the Marshall Square Historic District, she attended Parham Elementary, East Side Junior High, and Little Rock Senior High Schools. She met her husband, Harold, while waitressing at The Blue Goose, a popular drive-in. They married in 1939 and had three children--Bob, John, and Pete. Their baseball games were her summer highlight. A familiar face behind the glove counter at MM Cohn, and later an assistant buyer, she was also an experienced traveler, flying frequently to New York, Washington, Canada, and touring throughout western US. A great reader, she encouraged every child she met to pick up a book. Deenie lived with her son, Robert, and wife, Deborah for many years in Little Rock. She is survived by them; son John and wife Maria of Annandale, Virginia; grandsons Blaise, of South Riding, Virginia, Raphael, of Arlington, Virginia, and Christopher, of Dallas, Texas; a granddaughter, Michele Clements of Hot Springs, AR and five great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 15, at 10:00 AM in the Ruebel Funeral Home chapel. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Central Arkansas Library System.
