Biography: Morris Byrd of Little Rock died July 13 at Little Rock Baptist Medical Center. Born September 13, 1915 in Stigler, Oklahoma, he earned degrees in agronomy from Oklahoma State University, where he met Berniece Lucille Black, who became his wife of 67 years. His career in the Soil Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture was interrupted by World War II service in the South Pacific with the Army Air Corps. Following his military duty, he resumed his career in Ashdown before moving to Little Rock in 1957. He was enthusiastic about any growing plant or vegetable, and played a major role in the introduction of Zoysia grass to Arkansas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Phillip and daughter-in-law Janet of Montclair, New Jersey, and thousands of Zoysia grass lawns throughout Arkansas. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2006 at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, North Little Rock.
