Biography: Harry Parkin Saunders, 50, of Little Rock and New York City, died Wednesday, June 8,2011 in New York City. He was born to Jane Parkin McMullin, of Little Rock, and Charles Sullivan, in Little Rock, Arkansas, November 19, 1960. Parkin graduated from All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Miss., and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the New York School of Interior Design. Moving from Arkansas to New York in 1980 to pursue the study of interior design, Parkin began his New York design career as an apprentice to Mario Buatta, but his earliest influences were based at home. In 1985, Parkin founded the firm Saunders & Walsh with his late-partner, Christopher Walsh, and in 1996 formed his eponymous New York-based design firm, H. Parkin Saunders, Inc. Parkin supplemented his creative gifts as a decorator with an encyclopedic knowledge of art and design, enormous personal style, an incorrigible sense of humor, and an unforgettable Southern drawl. Parkin's personal design philosophy was that "all good things go together" and in his life, as in his work, they did. To step into Parkin's world was to step outside of everyday reality into a realm of exquisite yet accessible perfection - a mode of living that combined traditional good taste and Southern hospitality with an inimitable sense of contemporary chic. A lover of fine clothes, food, wine, flowers, art and travel, Saunders spent his life indulging his interests and generously sharing his experiences with friends and family. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in New York City, served on the board of the All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and sat on numerous committees related to the business of design, art and antiques in New York, Greenwich, Southampton, and Paris. He was predeceased by his father, Charlie Sullivan. He is survived by his partner, Ryan Nessing, of New York; his mother, Jane McMullin, his adoptive father, Bill Saunders, of Little Rock; his step-father, Carleton McMullin: his sister, Vicki Saunders Kirchoff, of St. Louis, MO; his brother, Andrew Saunders, of Los Angeles, CA; nephews Harry Kirchoff, Nicholas Kirchoff, and niece Katherine Kirchoff of st. Louis. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be sent to the Central Park Conservancy (Park Benches Fund) 14 East 60th St., New York, NY 10022 or the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum for Design 2 East 91st St., NewYork,NY. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Little Rock, AR, with a luncheon immediately to follow in Morrison Hall. A separate memorial will be held in New York City at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com

Words cannot express my shock and sadness at hearing of Parkin's death. To Andrew and Jane, please know my thoughts and prayers are with you.
I have been looking at photos from those magical summers in Southampton- and I can't believe he is gone. There was no one like Parkin and the beauty he created will remain. He was a big brother and a mentor to me.

Dearest Jane and Family,

I can only comprehend a small part of the great loss you all must feel. Parkin was so special - a beautiful person who projected such sophistication and poise. He was a brilliant decorator and created so many wonderful places that are a gift to anyone who sees them. It was a true privilege to know Parkin and work with him. Through him I met you, Jane, and that too is a gift. You are in my prayers and may God give you and your family strength and peace. Fondly, CW

HPS was the man who had it all, intelligence, whit,
looks, success, taste, freedom, friends, accomplishment. HPS lacked more time which is in itself a crook. We have been robbed of a lovely
bright being. May your journey be gentle.

When someone from the brotherhood and sisterhood of All Saints? Episcopal School dies, near or far, I as an ASES alumnus feel a deep sense of loss. And although I was in the eighth grade when Parkin was a senior, I do remember Parkin as first class in a Class of 1979 I looked up to and admired.

All of us at Lowy are saddened to hear of Parkin's passing. We have grown to love Parkin as a part of our extended family in the world of fine and decorative arts. He brought knowledge, sensitivity and impeccable taste and style to his work and daily life which he generously shared with all of us lucky enough to have known him. We will fondly remember his frequent visits to our shop where he always brought creativity combined with wit to the job which never felt like work. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and Ryan. God Bless.

Parkin and I worked together and we were friends. Neither of us took that word "friendship" lightly. He lit up a room with his elegant presence, his laugh was contagious, his style was catchy. I spoke to him as recently as Sunday and had our usual laughs. He'll be in my heart forever. My thoughts are with you Jane, Andrew and Vicki and all other family members. To Ryan, you were the big rock.

I was so shocked to hear this news. Tears come again as I write this.

I repeat Scottie's sentiments: Parkin was clever, hilarious, dignified, and kind. He was a consummate gentleman and one of the most generous people I have ever known. He carried himself with style and class, always impeccably dressed for the occasion. He was a dear friend. I regret that we have not been in touch more often over the last 27 years.

I have a lot of memories I would love to share with all of you, Jane and Ryan especially - when you are ready.

My heart is with you all.

I only met Parkin late fall of last year. He was a kind and generous man, whom supported me as a young artist and painter. We grew to be close friends. I spoke with him Sunday and he was in great cheer and ever greater kindness. I haven't ever lost a friend like this and will miss him forever. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and partner Ryan Nessing. God Bless.
