Biography: Betty Sue Cunningham Lowry, age 90, of Little Rock died Tuesday, August 1, 2006. She was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas the daughter of the late Robert Chandler and Mattie Crow Cunningham. She was educated in the public schools of Arkadelphia and Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia. She was graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1937 with the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While at the University, she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and served as Vice-President of the student body during her senior year. A member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock for over 50 years, Betty Sue was a past Moderator of the Presbyterian Women and was the second woman ordained to serve as a Ruling Elder in that congregation. Great-granddaughter of Matthew Cunningham, the first Mayor of Little Rock, Betty Sue was active in the city’s civic life, serving as treasurer of both the Junior League of Little Rock and the Speech Correction School, past president of the Mount Holly Cemetery Association, director of the Y.W.C.A., director and Residential Chairman of the Community Chest, now the United Way, director of the Visiting Nurses Association, and member of the Garden Club of Little Rock and the Colonial Dames of America. In addition to her civic activities, she was an avid gardener and traveler. Betty Sue preceded in death by her husband the late Robert Dindinger Lowry. She is survived by her son Robert Cunningham Lowry of Little Rock, grandson Robert William Lowry of Little Rock, granddaughter Mary Catherine Lowry Ford and husband Jonathan of Shreveport, La., and great-grandchildren Mary Chandler Louise and Jackson Eli Lowry Ford of Shreveport, La. There will be a funeral service held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2006 in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church officiated by the Reverend Steve Hancock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mount Holly Cemetery Association or Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock.
