Biography: Melinda R. Gilbert Walls, of Little Rock, passed away, May 4, 2011 following an extended illness. She was at home with family and friends. She was born June 11, 1964 and grew up in Dierks, Arkansas. Melinda graduated from Henderson State University in 1985 and the University Of Arkansas School Of Law in 1987. She practiced law in North Little Rock, opening her own practice in family law, and was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America. In 2008, Melinda was elected to the 11th Division Circuit Court, 6th Judicial District for Pulaski and Perry counties. This is a Juvenile Division of the court, a service Melinda felt called to serve. Though her tenure on the bench was relatively short, she cherished the work and the staff, who continue to serve the court. She was preceded in death by her father, Denzil Gilbert and her father-in-law, Carroll Walls, Sr. Melinda is survived by her husband of 21 years, Carroll Walls, Jr.; her daughter, Caroline; her son, Connor; her mother, Helen Berg and husband, Ralph of Dierks; her grandmother, Oca Mae Vancil of Dierks; her special Uncle Keith and Aunt Ann of Dierks and her mother-in-law, Sue Walls of Little Rock. She is also survived by an extended family that she loved very much. Melinda had a host of friends and colleagues, too numerous to mention. Their visits, cards, notes and flowers reflected their love and concern for Melinda. The family appreciates the support of the Wednesday Communion Group from St. James United Methodist Church throughout Melinda?s illness. Their faithful visits were a great comfort to everyone. The family would like to thank the medical professionals who served Melinda at UAMS and through Arkansas Hospice and Brightstar, especially Pat and Amalia who cared greatly for her. A memorial service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011. A reception will immediately follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

I just now discovered this while trying to get in touch with Melinda. So sorry for the family, and the friends as well. Prior to becoming a judge Melinda helped me through a very difficult time and her passing is a loss for us all.

I just found out about Melinda tonight at dinner with some old friends of the Court. I'm so very sorry and sad to hear of your loss. Melinda was a great person. I hate it that I didn't find out about this until 6 months later. I worked for Pulaski County 10-1/2 years where I met her, and also shared Melinda's love for Women's SEC Basketball.

I also read my HSU alumni newsletter and learned of Melinda's passing. Serving for over 20 years on active duty, I came to find out she was a circuit judge while home on leave. I had a number of classes with her and she was extremely driven and helped me when I needed assistance. Always full of life and a friendly smile, it was a pleasure to have her as a classmate and friend. Respectfully, Brian J. Kueter,LTC(RET), U.S. Army, HSU Class of 1986

Melinda always made an impact even with the little things. I am a member of the Class of '82 from Dierks and remember Melinda asking me to do a Waltz at one of our banquets. As painfully horrible as I danced (never dance before this), she was very kind. this kindness in my failure is what prompted me to 'try out' a training class at a Fred Astaire Dance Studio when they told me 'if nothing else you will learn to dance a little'. For the next 8 years, I enjoying teaching others to dance and only hope I gave them the same kindness Melinda gave me.

It is a blessing to have known Melinda and you are all in my prayers.

Guys, I'm so sorry to belatedly hear about Melinda's death. This is a great loss. I hope you are comforted by the memories you have of her and by the support you receive from friends. I think fondly of her through the time Jane and I had with you, Carroll and Caroline, through Y Indian Princesses. I know it sounds cliche, but you all have been in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Helen, Carroll, Caroline and Connor, there are few words to say that will take away the pain and difficult time you are going through. Many have already said so many great and wonderful things about Melinda and I agree with them. Melinda was always a blessing to my family though the years. I remember her growing up when she was small, through her school years, as she was in college and in law school, working in Dierks and then as she became a lawyer, wife and mother. I will never forget her big smile and encouragment she always gave me and so many others. She was such a blessing to me and an inspiration. Even as she was sick and going through so many health problems she was the one trying to encourage everyone else. Thanks to you all for sharing Melinda with the rest of us! Psalm 91:4

Our hearts are heavy at this time. Carrol, Carolyn and Conner. We will always remember Melinda as one of the top notch ladies of our lives after we moved to Texarkana. Were members of her Dad's church. Learned to adore Carolyn & Conner when they visited here. Spent many hours
with her sweet children. She had a beautiful voice when we heard her sing! Now she is whole
and singing with the angels in heaven. RIP JUDGE
Gilbert.

I feel very fortunate to have known Melinda, although briefly, through her service to the YMCA. I always enjoyed her sense of humor, her positive attitude, high expectations, and concern for others.

Although I didn't know Melinda long or well, I will carry many memories of her always.

How heavy were our hearts when we heard that Melinda had passed. Our families and extended families go a long way back to when we all lived on the "hill'. I taught school with her mother, and taught Melinda when she was in high school. If you wanted something to get done just ask Melinda and she would rally the troops and get it done. We love all of you so very much and are praying for you. God bless you and give you comfort that only He can.

My dear Helen, I love you and wish that something could be done to ease the pain of losing Melinda, but I really doubt that anything will for quite some time. I watched her grow from a tiny baby into a lovely, confident woman who made her family proud. You have been a wonderful, devoted mother and serve as an inspiration to us all. Mike and I send our sympathy and prayers for you and Carroll and the kids.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Melinda's family. Our daughter Kele relocated to Arkansas to attend school and was fortunate to be welcomed into Melinda's family. It gave us comfort knowing Melinda was there for her. It was with Melinda's help that Kele was able to have a beautiful wedding to Jonathon, as long distance planning on my end was quite complicated. We will always carry those memories and Melinda's memory with us.
She was a great friend! She will be missed!

I'm so very sorry for Melinda's loss. She was "just something else" and that was a very good thing. Melinda's bubbliness for life was seen each and every day you came in contact with her. She was always excited, loving, always ready to give of herself in whatever project we had for her at the Arkansas Bar Association. I remember Judith Gray saying if we couldn't find someone to do a specific "family" oriented program, call Melinda, she'll do it. Melinda was just one of the lawyers I'll never forget for her genuineness and character for doing the right thing...

Melinda and I were roommates at Henderson for a year. She was always a caring and loving person. We had lost touch over the years; but I sometimes saw her at the courthouse in Little Rock in recent years, and we would always spend a few minutes catching up. I am so sorry for your loss. Your family will be in my prayers. May you find peace and comfort from our Lord and Saviour during the difficult days ahead.

Helen & Family,
I will always take pride in having known Melinda since childhood. She was a true friend and a genuinely good person who always had time for everybody. I remember with fondness the good times our families shared on weekends at Lake Greeson when she and I were youths. The lives of those who knew her have been enriched through her caring and kindness. May God Bless each of you in the days to come. TP
