Biography: Mayriann ?Feetie? Conley Hurst died Tuesday night March 29th, 2011. She was born in Little Rock at her home on September 14, 1925, the daughter of Howard Harry Conley and Marie Cates Conley Campbell. Her Father was the Arkansas General Agent for the New York Life Insurance Company. He was also a developer of Edgehill where he built the home in which Feetie grew up. Feetie was very proud that her Father's family was related to William Frederick ?Buffalo Bill? Cody. Her Mother's family was one of the original settlers of Little Rock and one of the founders of the Methodist Church in Arkansas. Feetie was the youngest of three children. Her eldest brother, Howard Harry Conley, Jr. also worked for the New York Life Insurance Company and retired as Vice President of Marketing in New York City. Her next elder brother, French Frank Conley was an airline pilot for United Airlines. Feetie grew up in Little Rock and graduated from Forest Park Elementary, Pulaski Heights Junior High and Little Rock High School. In 1945 she graduated from Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, New York. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of the Iota Chapter of Chi Omega Fraternity. She majored in psychology. She interrupted her education to participate with nine other young ladies in the Little Rock Debutante Club, 1946-1947, carrying on a tradition in Little Rock that had been curtailed during World War II. Always ready to take an active role, Feetie was the secretary of the club. During an extremely busy fall social season, Feetie met Joseph Barber Hurst who was one of her six escorts at her debut. Joe was seven years her senior and had served during World War II as a First Lieutenant flying fifty bombing missions over North Africa, Italy and the Balkans. When they met Joe had begun his career as a florist in the family business of Tipton & Hurst. He swept Feetie off her feet and they were married in Little Rock on April 19, 1947. They celebrated their last anniversary in 2007, which was their 60th. Feetie was a very committed volunteer. She was a Sustaining member of the Junior League of Little Rock, had been President in 1965-1966 and the Sustainer Advisor in 1985-1986. Feetie was a member of the Little Rock Garden Club and was President in 1973-1974. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames and was President of the Arkansas Society in 1984-1986. Feetie was a life long member of First United Methodist Church in Little Rock and served as Altar Guild President in 1976-1977. Feetie took great pride in dressing well. She would never step out of the house without her hair and makeup all in place and in a tailored suit or a well-coordinated sports outfit. The Arkansas Gazette wrote an article about Feetie and her passion for fashionable clothes in 1990 titled "Hurst handles her look." Feetie was a true southern lady but she never had time or the inclination to just sit and ?smell the roses,? although she of course loved roses and all flowers. In between raising three children, she was always busy with her volunteer work, filling in at Tipton & Hurst on the sales desk during busy holidays and of course, playing tennis and bridge. She loved to play tennis with Joe and their regular Wednesday night tennis group. The group continued to meet every Wednesday night for dinner long after they could no longer play tennis. She also was a determined ladies doubles competitor and with her good friend Connie Bowen won the Ladies Senior Doubles Championship in 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1981 at the Country Club of Little Rock. Feetie and Joe also played golf into there eighties when their tennis days were over. Feetie rarely missed her bridge group?s regular lunch and bridge game that began soon after they were debutantes together and is still meeting. Feetie was preceded in death by her parents, by her stepfather Gordon H. Campbell, by her husband, Joe, her brothers French and Howard and her son-in-law David Kearney Gunti. She is survived by her daughter Marie Hurst Gunti of Pine Bluff; her son Joseph Barber Hurst, Jr. and his wife Mimi Myer Hurst of Little Rock; her son Howard Cates Hurst and his wife Stacy Johnson Hurst of Little Rock; six grandchildren, Dr. Susan Gunti McGeorge and her husband Brian Scott McGeorge of Little Rock; Ann Ellen Gunti of Fayetteville; Joseph Barber Hurst III, Margaret Myer Hurst, Conley Karlovic Hurst and Johanna Cates Hurst of Little Rock; and three great grandchildren, Miles Wallace McGeorge, Morgan David McGeorge and Huntley Hurst McGeorge of Little Rock. She is also survived by four nieces and six nephews. The family wishes to thank all of Feetie's caregivers, especially Jamie Wilson, for always being ready and willing to help her. Also the family wishes to thank Dr. Joe Beck and all her doctors and the staff of the St. Vincent's MICU. As the Wife and Mother of life long florists, Feetie would have wanted flowers in lieu of memorials, but both are greatly appreciated. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 4th, 2011 at Ruebel Funeral Home, The funeral service will be Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Little Rock. My mother, Jackie Franke Kelley, used to always talk about "Feetie" through the years. I knew my mother loved her dearly. I am so sorry for your loss.
