Biography: Mary Frances Proue, 79, of Little Rock, died on Monday, March 14, 2011. She was born in Little Rock on July 28, 1931 to the late Jacob and Gertrude Sullivan Proue. She is survived by her sister Edith Proue Foot of Little Rock and 12 loving nieces and nephews as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Betty Proue Byers, Janice Proue Doramus and Jacqueline Proue Albers. Although Mary contracted polio when she was 15 years old and was in a wheelchair from that age, she always counted her blessings and felt that God had big plans for her. She saw every setback as an opportunity and was a witness to all who knew her. Mary worked for many years for Proue Auto, McLarty Leasing and Pulmonary Associates, where she was the office manager until her retirement. Being in a wheelchair did not keep her from living by herself, driving to work and attending her beloved church. Mary and her family were founding members of Grace Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong children?s Sunday School teacher as well as a member of the choir. She touched countless lives through her faith and spirit. She also considered it a privilege to preach on a regular basis at Woodland Hills Retirement Home where she was a resident. Mary?s family would like to give special thanks to Pastor Walter and the entire congregation of Grace Lutheran Church for their endless support and care. A special thank you is also extended to Mary?s many friends and neighbors who brought joy to her life. A funeral service to celebrate Mary?s life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Kavanaugh and Hillcrest, Little Rock, AR at 12:30 Wednesday, March 16 followed by burial at Little Rock National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 5124 Hillcrest Street, Little Rock, AR 72205.

I was so blessed to have met and got to know Mary as I visited another resident at Woodland Hills. Her love for the Lord was so evident in everything she said and did. My husband and I took her out to Lakeside where she had been many times before she contacted polio. I know she has a pair of special wings in heaven! She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as this sad time. I will miss her friendship.

Our condolences on the passing of Mary. Our family got to know her when my grandmother, Elizabeth Straessle, was living at Woodland Hills. She always had a sparkle in her eye and a ready smile and hello for the children, who often visited her room to see her parakeet. She was a lovely, lovely lady. She helped and encouraged my family when we were hosting the monthly birthday parties for the residents at Woodland Hills. Thoughts of her will always bring a smile--what a legacy! You are in our prayers.

Dear Family of Mary, Was so sorry to read of Mary"s passing. She was our angel while our Mother was at Woodland Hills. Her special prayers sustained us many times. I had the privilege of teaching Mary to paint a landscape at Woodland Hills. Mary was in the room across from Mother during Mother's last years. My sisters and I visited with Mary almost every day. Love and prayers to all of Mary's family. Sincerely, Patty Sheffield

As a child Mary was probably my first real friend. I was three and mary was probably in her early 50's. We were next door neighbors. I ould sit in my fathers fishing boat and have picnics while Mary would sit in her carport and visit with me. We would spend, what felt like hours, visiting every day.
What a blessing Mary was to me and my family! I love you sweet Mary Proue!

What a wonderful person--Mary was beautiful, with great inner beauty, as well as outward beauty. The Pulaski Heights Baptist Church has services in Woodland Hills the 2nd Sunday of every month. Mary was always so helpful to us, with the sound system, and gathering people for the service. She was always smiling and joyful, and beautifully dressed, even when we knew she was having health issues. I missed her Sunday, and will miss her, but know she is having a wonderful time in her new home.
