Dr. Francis Buchanan

 

Obituary Notice  

     Dr. Francis Randall (Tony) Buchanan, of Little Rock, died Friday, June 11, 2004. He was the son of Dr. Frank Reitz and Carrie Mae Hesse Buchanan, and was born April 25, 1917, in Thomas, Oklahoma. He graduated from Canton High School, attended Northwestern Oklahoma College, received a BS from The University of Oklahoma, and graduated from The University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1942. He served in the US Navy Medical Corp in Honolulu, Hawaii Submarine Base during World War II. Dr. Buchanan finished his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. He served his residencies in surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and Illinois and Hines Veterans Hospital in Maywood, Illinois. In 1951, he moved his family to Little Rock, where he was associated with the New Veterans Hospital in the Surgery Department. He started his private practice two years later. He was a former member of the Arkansas Medical Society, American Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Board of Surgery, and Southwestern Surgical College. He was a board member of Little Rock Land Company, which built the Doctor's Building and Hospital. He was a staff member of St. Vincent Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Doctor's Hospital. He was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, where formerly served on the Board and taught Sunday school. Tony was an avid golfer with membership at Pleasant Valley Country Club. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Arkansas Hospice for their compassionate care.

     Dr. Buchanan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris Edwards Buchanan of Little Rock, three sons: Dr. Frank Randall Buchanan and wife Patricia of Eugene, Oregon, Charles Millard Buchanan of Denton, Texas, and James Douglas Buchanan of Charlotte, North Carolina, 8 grandchildren: Tricia, Ryan, Louisa, Laura, Amy, Stephen and Ehren Buchanan, and Heidi Chackle, 2 great-grandchildren: Colby and Alex Chackle, a sister Carolee Abshire of Georgetown, Texas, sister-in-law Bobbie Buchanan of Sacramento, California, a brother-in-law Harry Haigler of Canton, Oklahoma, a brother-in-law Charles Edwards and wife Nancy of Texarkana, Texas, brother-in-law Duffy Martin and wife Juanita of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and several nieces and nephews.
