Jane Joyce Smith Whitney

Jane Joyce Smith Whitney

Jane Joyce Smith Whitney, 89, of Little Rock, died Friday, March 5, 2010 in Little Rock after a long battle with Parkinson Disease. She was born Feb. 17, 1921, to Robin Blythe Smith and Dr. Wells Ferrin Smith in Little Rock.

Jane graduated from the University of Southern California after attending finishing school in Los Angeles, and was selected to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., before meeting her future husband, David E. Whitney, who survives her. Jane returned home to Little Rock, and ultimately embarked on a 42-year career with Tipton Hurst Florists.

For many Little Rock natives, Jane represented the helpful, smiling face of Tipton throughout the 1960s, ‘70s, 80s and 90s. She was a faithful, long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Wells Ferrin Smith; three sisters, Mabel Smith Lauve, Elizabeth Smith Price and Elsie Smith; and a brother, Dr. John McCollough Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, David Whitney and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery in Little Rock. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church under the direction of Rev. Karen Akin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, AR 72227, or the Arkansas chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, 3 Ola Way, Hot Springs, AR 71909. "Sweet, sweet Jane! She was the best. I will miss her."
Susan Mehlburger | Mobile, AL | smehlburg@aol.com

"David,
Jane was such a blessing from God to me as a teenager. She was my mentor, teacher and friend. Jane was among the best service managers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. What she taught me brought me much success in my career and as a parent. Her love for people and kind and gentle spirit is just what God wants us all to project. She really did choose to do what Jesus would do. I have thought of her often over these years and smiled at her beauty inside and out. I thank God for putting her in my path to make me a better person.
God bless you as you grieve your loss and praying you are comforted knowing she is with her Father in heaven.
Blessings,
Sharon Zimmerebner Smith
