W. Horace Jewell
W. Horace Jewell, age 84, of Little Rock died on Saturday, September 18, 2004, the sixtieth anniversary of his marriage to Irma Murphy Jewell. He was born on December 16, 1919 in Hope, AR to the late Albert T. and Eliza Winn Jewell. Mr. Jewell received his law degree from the University of Arkansas and began practicing law with the Little Rock firm of House, Moses and Holmes in 1944. His clients included Terry Dairy, Terminal Warehouse, Batesville White Lime, Moon Distributors, Southwest Hotels, and Arkansas Power and Light Co. He served as senior partner for his firm until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Jewell is survived by his wife Irma; children, Anne Jewell and Louis Ederington of Norman, OK, Judith K. Jewell of Little Rock, Rebecca Jewell and Richard Engborg of Asbury, NJ, Joseph Winn and Jan Bratton Jewell of Pittsburg, TX, and John Mason and Mallory VanDover Jewell of Little Rock; two brothers, Albert T. Jewell, Jr. of Springdale, AR, and Wilton G. Jewell of Fort Worth, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Benjamin and Josh Ederington, Emily Penfield, David Freeman, Amanda Engborg, Matt and Ryan Jewell, and Mason and Emma Jewell, and four great-grandchildren, Caroline, Katherine, Sam and Eliza. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Winn Jewell, three infant children, and a grandson, Andrew.
Mr. Jewell was a member of First United Methodist Church for sixty years and served on the Administrative Board. His large extended family was an important part of his life.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 20th at the First United Methodist Church, Little Rock, with the Rev. Emily Freeman Penfield, the Rev. David Freeman, and the Rev. Dr. Michael Mattox officiating.
