Laura Woolridge Hopson

Obituary Notice

Laura Wooldridge Hopson died in a local nursing home on November 22, 2003. She was born in Little Rock on June 14, 1905, to Robert d'Orsay and Sophia Hotze Wooldridge, both deceased. She was educated in the Little Rock Public Schools, and graduated from Wellesley College. Through Wellesley Alumna affairs, she became a close friend of Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, a friendship lasting a life time. There was a touch of irony in the friendship as her late husband, Colonel William D. Hopson, was an early and distinguished member of the Flying Tigers stationed in China in World War II.

Mrs. Hopson was married to Colonel-Hopson in the Hotze House where she had resided from birth. She took great pride in the home which was a residential showplace in the early days of Little Rock.

Mrs. Hopson is survived by three nieces of her husband, Marie Taylor and Jane Ward of Little Rock, and Carolyn Rosenfield of River Ridge, Louisiana.

A private family interment was conducted at Mt. Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, on December 2, 2003. Memorials may be made to Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts 02482, or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

  • During the late 1960's I lived in an apartment on the top floor of the Hotze House. it was such a beautiful and graciously built home, I often wondered about the former owners of the house. I wish I had known about Mrs. Hopson and could have shared some of her memories of her old home.
